The Cost Of Never Stopping
I want to ask you something… and I want you to sit with it for a moment before you answer.
When was the last time you truly stopped?
Not just slept. Not just took a weekend. Not just scrolled through your phone on the couch while half-listening to something in the background.
I mean, really stopped. Exhaled. Let yourself be still without the weight of what comes next pressing in from every direction.
If you are having trouble remembering… that is exactly what I want to talk about today.
We Have Normalized Running on Empty
There is a particular kind of exhaustion that high-achieving leaders carry. It is not the kind that shows up on your face or slows your step. It is the invisible kind… the kind you have learned to function through, to hide, to push past so consistently that you have almost forgotten it is there.
We celebrate busy. We wear our packed calendars like badges. We answer emails at midnight and call it dedication. We say yes when we mean no, give more than we have, and quietly move ourselves to the bottom of our own priority list ~ all in the name of leadership, family, responsibility, love.
And the world rewards us for it. So we keep going.
But here is what I have learned… what we call dedication is sometimes just depletion with better branding.
When we never stop, we never refill. And a leader who never refills has less and less to give ~ even as they give more and more. The quality of our decisions suffers. Our creativity narrows. Our patience thins. We show up in body but check out in spirit. And the people around us ~ the teams we lead, the families we love ~ feel that absence even when they cannot name it.
The Lie We Tell Ourselves
The lie sounds like this: I will rest when things slow down.
But things never slow down. Not really. There is always another quarter, another deadline, another season demanding everything you have. The slowdown we are waiting for is not coming ~ and somewhere in our hearts, we already know that.
So what do we do instead?
We do something radical. We stop waiting for permission, and we choose to be poured into ~ intentionally, deliberately, before we reach empty.
What Actually Happens When You Stop
I cannot tell you what it looks like for everyone. But I can tell you what it looked like for me.
When I finally built real rest into my own life ~ not as a reward for finishing, but as a practice I protected ~ something shifted. Not immediately. Not dramatically. But quietly and profoundly, I began to show up differently. Clearer. More present. More myself.
The people around me noticed before I did.
Rest is not the enemy of your ambition. It is the source of it.
When we stop ~ really stop ~ we create space for the things that cannot grow in the noise. Self-awareness. Clarity of purpose. The kind of deep, unhurried thinking that produces the ideas and decisions that actually matter.
An Invitation
This September, I am creating a space for leaders to stop. Just for one evening. Not to fix anything, solve anything, or add more to the list ~ but to exhale, connect, and be reminded of the remarkable person they already are.
Believe In You Refresh is September 3, 2026, starting at 5:30 pm. It is an evening of guided conversation, art, spoken word, and community ~ designed specifically for the leaders who carry a lot and rarely stop to be poured into.
This year’s conversation is The Beauty of Imperfection ~ and if that title landed somewhere in you, I think you already know why.
You do not have to wait until things slow down to take care of yourself. You can choose ~ right now ~ to be the kind of leader who refills.
I hope to see you on September 3, 2026.
Until next time ~
